这一季的故事依然围绕着五位主角展开。相恋9年的马修（杰森·席格尔 Jason Segel 饰）和莉莉（艾丽森·汉妮根 Alyson Hannigan 饰）终于决定结婚，在他们为婚礼筹备忙得不亦乐乎时，准新娘莉莉却忽然一声不吭独自跑去旧金山学艺术，马修只好取消婚礼。三个月后莉莉重新回到纽约，想要和马修重修于好，伤透了心的马修是否原谅莉莉？ 另一方面，互有好感的二人——泰德（乔什·拉德诺 Josh Radnor 饰）和罗宾（寇碧·史莫德斯 Cobie Smulders饰），在经过种种事件、多番波折后，终于了解自己真正的感情，于是二人决定在一起。而花花公子巴尼（尼尔·帕特里克·哈里斯 Neil Patrick Harris 饰）依旧享受着他的单身汉生活，但在其他方面他却保持神秘，泰德等四人发现他们其实并不了解巴尼，于是都开始对巴尼好奇起来……。Edna's father wants her to marry wealthy Count He-Ha. Charlie, Edna's true love, impersonates the Count at dinner, but the real Count shows up and Charlie is thrown out. Later on Charlie and Edna are chased by her father, The Count, and three policeman.
