老军人栗峰在病房看到一篇题为《壮哉沙海老兵村》的报刊文章，陷入回忆。新中国成立不久，身为第一野战军一野一兵团能攻善守英雄团团长的栗峰带领张远发、盛成福、姚大勇、郭学成等人进军新疆横穿沙漠，与国民党驻和田部队激战。战役中，盛成福被砸断脊椎，张远发则为保护栗峰失去右臂。新疆解放后，英雄团扎根边疆，建设边疆，并与来到新疆的女兵们有情人终成眷属。刘德寿为保护粮种牺牲在沙漠中，妻子枣花生下女儿刘星后却在地震中变成植物人。栗峰奉调北京，决定带走刘星，改名栗星加以照顾，却将自己的儿子栗亮留给了张远发。多年后栗星得知一切，决定带着身为北京市援疆干部的儿子李漠回到老兵村。在相隔多年后的百家宴上得知栗峰去逝，并将骨灰带回老兵村。在栗峰的墓碑前，当年驻守边疆以及他们的后代们一起向栗峰敬礼致敬。。Three loosely connected love stories.
