故事开始于1960年代末。高秀兰（郝岩 饰）的丈夫撒手归天，留给她一女三男四个孩子，她的日子过得十分艰难。就在这时，有人给她介绍了锅炉工老关头（李幼斌 饰），秀兰感觉又有了依靠。俩人结婚后，孩子们感觉母亲把感情转移到了继父身上，于是产生了对立。面对这群难以管教的孩子，老关头几次产生离去的念头，但由于舍不得放弃心爱的秀兰，想想也就算了，时光荏冉，秀兰至到死也没能听到孩子们叫老关头一声爸爸，她带着遗憾离开了这个世界。秀兰故去不久，老关头也离世了，孩子们在整理其遗物时发现，在一个旧箱子里，盛满了自他进入这个家庭以来的月份牌，当看到上面记录的种种内容，儿女们泪流满面......。How easy is it for desperate youngsters to become dangerous gangsters in a decaying society washed all over by the blood of war?
