本次的故事发生在全新的冒险舞台——“合众地方”。其蓝本是第五世代游戏（口袋妖怪黑白）。小智与皮卡丘和新伙伴艾莉丝、天桐一起展开为了追寻梦想和冒险以及和各种各样神奇宝贝的邂逅的旅行。。明万历年间，京城名妓杜十娘与进京应试的江南公子李甲相识。李甲得好友柳遇春帮忙，赎出十娘喜结百年之好。二人返乡经过瓜州，盐商孙富见十娘美貌，便约正为如何回家面对严父的李甲喝酒，劝其别为一青楼女子耽误前程。李甲愁苦无奈将十娘卖与孙富，十娘闻讯怒沉百宝箱，投江自尽。睡莲庵老尼救起十娘，留其带发修行。柳遇春高中后陪夫人至庵中还愿，与十娘相遇，携十娘回到苏州。李甲一路流浪到苏州，心中为十娘之死痛悔万分，不想巧遇柳遇春……。Birds of paradise are one of David Attenborough's lifelong passions.
