A mother and a daughter struggle to climb the Swiss Alps while they dig into a past that the mother has spent years suppressing. The daughter's persistence in trying to make her mom remember and take responsibility puts the two women's relation...。故事发生在1956年的美国，工人查理（艾德·哈里斯 Ed Harris 饰）爱上了歌女帕奇（杰西卡·兰格 Jessica Lange 饰），可是此时的帕奇已经嫁为人妻，她拒绝了查理的追求。不久，帕奇的婚姻陷入了困境，和丈夫格兰德（James Staley 饰）离婚后，帕奇顺理成章地和查理在一起了。 1958年，查理应召入伍，身怀六甲的帕奇决定放弃事业，追随丈夫的脚步。然而，一下子失去了生活的重心，帕奇陷入了抑郁之中，她和查理之间的关系也降到了冰点。之后，孩子降生，帕奇重新回到了歌坛，并且大获成功。可是，和事业上的顺风顺水不同，帕奇和查理之间的爱情却再也不能回到从前，越来越自卑的查理甚至动手打了帕奇。。
